Der, die, das explained clearly

English logic

German nouns have grammatical gender. English nouns do not, so you need to learn the article with the noun.

Gender clues

Endings often help:

der-er, -en, -ling
der Lehrerder Gartender Frühling
die-ung, -heit, -keit
die Wohnungdie Freiheitdie Möglichkeit
das-chen, -ment, -um

Why German feels harder than it should

Most learners do not fail because they are lazy. They struggle because the learning path is unclear.

German-only classes move too fast

You copy phrases before understanding the logic.

Books explain rules, not progress

You read about cases, articles, and word order, but still do not know how to build sentences.

Apps give answers, not explanations

You practise, but you do not always understand why your answer was wrong.

Exams need structure

Goethe, telc, jobs, PR, and citizenship require steady progress, not random vocabulary.

How GoGermany teaches differently

Not a translation app or a grammar drill tool. GoGermany teaches you how German works, why it works that way, and how to use it in situations that matter.

04

Practise in stages

From the students

Real feedback from international students studying and working in Germany.

The Bürgeramt vocabulary alone saved me. I finally knew what forms to ask for and could actually understand the responses.

Aditya K.

Master's student, TU Berlin

I tried Duolingo for months and still couldn't form a sentence. Two weeks into GoGermany and grammar finally clicked.

Emma S.

Exchange student from Australia

Passed my Goethe A1 on the first try. The mock exams at the end of the course are almost identical to the real thing.

Common questions

Do I need an account to start?

You need a free account to access the lessons. Sign up takes under a minute and there is no credit card required.

How long do the courses take?

Each chapter takes 45–65 minutes. A1 (24 chapters) is roughly 18–24 hours of study. A2 (26 chapters) adds another 20–26 hours. Most students complete A1 in 4–8 weeks, then move to A2.

Is it really free?

Chapter 1 of A1 is fully free with no account required. The full A1 and A2 courses require a free account to track your progress. B1 pricing is still being decided.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. GoGermany is a web app that works in any browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox. No app download needed. Audio pronunciation works on iOS Safari and Chrome desktop.

I already know some German — should I start at Chapter 1?

Browse the chapter list and jump in wherever feels right. Each chapter is self-contained enough that you can skip sections you already know.

Which exam does this prepare me for?

A1 ends with mock exams for the Goethe-Institut A1 and telc A1. A2 ends with Goethe A2 and telc A2 mock exams. These are the most common exams required for German visas and residency permits.
